This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Hi!
I was using GM approval on Character Creation:
Group approval, every player in the group needs to approve a character. The idea is to promote players talking about the theme/genre/style of the game.
What do you think? Do you like it, would you do it differently?

That's a great way, especially when there are distinct roles to fill, like in a starship crew or a dungeon raider team. I have found it impractical though, as many times we don't want to spoil precious gaming time with stuff like this. So it's easier to generate characters seperately with the DM as a coordinator. Coordinating Player wishes can be done in telephone conferences.

One of the games I ran, I had everyone create a character for someone else.

I school noobs, so...
I pretty much have to create peoples' characters for them.
And rely on one or two other vets to do the same.

Hi!
So, Beejazz, what do yo think of this idea then. Do you think it will interfere with your process, or just coast along beside it or?

mmm... I don't know about that... it may give the game a weird twist... but I believe in that every player making the character they wish to play withouth the  approval of the rest of the party...

obviously... this differs in games like WFRP, where players have to adapt to the kind of PC they get.

so... when playing D&D and the others of the kind I would prefer to have them make the characters they wish to play... excluding always special GM rules. xD

A guy I know did it in this way. "You write the background for your character, pass it to the player on your right, and they'll create the character using the game system, based on what you've written."

It encouraged some really detailed backgrounds, I heard :)

Probably coast alongside.
A more interesting approach, IMHO, would be "everyone generate a character for the player on your left."
Crazier shiz might happen then.
Especially if you then rotate right instead.

I don't know about "approval". How about "the player who comes up with the most interesting idea (as voted on by the group) starts with an advantage (bonus feat, magic item, action point, extra level..."
