This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

B/X actual play demonstration

As per this thread, the purpose of this particular let's play is to illustrate how most groups might have played B/X edition of D&D, and to see how it compares to other editions.

As the name implies "Basic", you'll find the rules much simpler than other editions.  In this case, we'll be using Moldvay's basic set.  The adventure will be the included Keep on the Borderlands, but I will make some changes (such as where certain magic items are located) to help mitigate out of character knowledge.  We also will probably not finish the adventure, as the scope of this thread can be completed without needing to.

Some house rules, to help keep things going:

* Starting character level is 1, with max hp.
* Roll 3d6, but assign in any order
* I will roll for initiative for both players and monsters.  Initiative is party based.  I.e., one roll for all party members.  Order of combat is: missile, spells, melee

For players, I have:
jedimastert
ladybird
Gamedaddy
Exploderwizard
Stormbringer
Blackhand

Can everyone confirm by end of day today?  Thanks.

Please just cut and paste your character here when finished.  I am assuming everyone has a copy of B/X (or LL in a pinch if you don't, but we'll primarily be on B/X rules).
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

Generic setting, yes.  Karameikos

For those not familiar with B/X, the character write above is complete.  Yes, you can literally fit your entire character on an index card.

Those were the days....

I think my son's head would explode if he rolled a poor stat roll like that.

For Basic, we really don't need to bother with noting Saves or Attack Tables here, do we?

Naw.  If you have the chart, I'll just ask you to roll against it.  You don't need to note it here.  Don't need AC table either.  Just tell me what AC you hit.

Quick question on initiative.

If the party wins initiative and we are at range does this mean that enemies with missiles will be able to fire before spellcasters can get a spell off?

No.  All party actions go first.  Just that the order party actions resolve is missile, spell, melee

#11

Sir Ector is from the mighty city of Specularum, and his family has resided there for generations.  You might say he was a minor noble, but the fact is his family has descended into decrepitude and obscurity over the last thirty years or so.  Now freed of his father's inept and heavy-handed constraints, Ector sets about restoring the name of the Kriegschlosse.

Yet no one remembers their glory.  Once, they built mighty fortresses across the lands, and were sought out for their skill.  Educated and regal, the Kriegschlosse crest was respected and renowned.  However, misspending and general malfeasance amongst his immediate elders have rendered the household assets down to a very limited store.

Namely, Sir Ector and his sword.

When he shut down his family's estate in Specularum and handed the keys over to its new lords, he took the last 2 gold coins in the family treasury and vowed he would build a mighty castle as the ancient warrior-scholars of his family once did.  The courts of Karameikos will remember the Kriegschlosse's glory, and his family's name discarded and ridiculed no longer.

That, or the sword itself would provide swift release from his constant shame.

Fyodor comes from a respectable Traladaran middle class family in the Threshold area. His father, Andre works in the logging camp to the East of town. He has two younger brothers; Demetri and Yakov and two younger sisters; Elena, and Nicoleta.

Fyodor learned to hunt as a boy and as a commoner never found much use for a sword. His preferred weapon is the thrown spear or a light one-handed axe for close quarters.

What method should be used to determine starting spells for a magic user?

I have Holmes Basic. I do not know how it differs from Moldvay in this way.
