This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Non-lethal Damage

I'm working on a little project and I'm stumped, sorta. Looking for a better wording of non-lethal damage. Just the wording, not the mechanics. The genre is modern. Looking for some suggestions. Thanks:)

Knockout damage? I've been pretty content with Subdual damage as well.

How about Bashing Damage?

Interesting. Thank you for your responses. Gets my mind churning. Which is why I asked.:) I the game I'm working on is a modern era spy/mercenary/commando kind of thing. I'm drawing from The Born Identity, John Lecarre's Karla Trilogy, The Tourist, Rainbow Six, The IPCRESS File, The Expendables, The Dogs of War, or Man on Fire. So I'm looking for something not to "comic booky". But Non-Lethal damage sounds to clinical, textual to me. Am I wrong in that thought? I do like subdual damage. That seems to ring well in my mind. If anyone else has more suggestions I would still love to hear them.

How about Cosmetic Damage. Just looks bad but doesn't actually impair but maybe adds up eventually.

Or Fatiguing damage. SOmething some rest can cure.

B&B Damage . . . Bumps and Bruises.

Just some thoughts.

Beatings rules.

Decking rules.

"A Good Drubbing." rule.

You could call it Normal Damage and then have firearms do Killing Damage..
Or you could distinguish between Blunt and Penetrating damage (a la JAGS), although that descriptor doesn't cover 'fatigue' damage like maybe suffocation or exhaustion as well.

Maybe fatigue or blunt trauma?

From my perspective of wording choice, it depends on if you're using a game where you refer to it as a damage or as a damage type.  Is it something where it overflows from a quick-healing version of the standard damage to physical, such as in Shadowrun, or a comparative damage transfer (such as in the 2e rules) or even a completely separate pool?

Kind of all of the above. Non-lethal will eventually turn to lethal damage. When a character has taken all the non- lethal they can it starts to turn into lethal. So say if a character has 5 non lethal slots (for lack of a better word). Then takes 4 non lethal. Then in another attack receives 2 more. It fills the last slot. Then comes around changing the first non-lethal slot to a lethal damage.

I'm a fan of blunt trauma then.  It doesn't reduce the effect that the damage presents, just points out that without the pointy or cutty bits it takes a bit longer or you have to hit em harder.

I was just about to say blunt damage seems like a good idea to me.
