This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Let's read/let's play type threads

Not sure why I thought this was the most appropriate sub-forum for this, but here goes...

I've done a fair bit of play-by-post over the last few years. I was vaguely aware it existed but had never investigated until I found myself without a group about 4 years back. Even though I've now got a regular game I've kept a couple of the pbps going up to this year (I'm quite proud that we passed the 2 year mark with one of them as the fail rate in my experience is weeks/months even with an enthusiastic group, unless you already happen to know them). However, even with a great GM and players, a game system I like, an interesting adventure and a very light posting schedule, in the last few months my heart hasn't been in it, so I've called time on one, and have told the other GM I'd like to make a managed exit to try not to disrupt the plot.

I do like the back and forth interaction you get though, so it made me wonder if there was a way to still get that, and tick off another thing I would like to do at the same time, without any of the 'pressure' of being in an actual pbp (cos unlike the majority of people I have come across, I think it's kinda rude to just skip out on a game with telling the GM). And so we get to the title of the thread.

I haven't contributed to the Gameshelf thread in the main forum due to a lack of a camera, but I think I'd be able to put up a credible showing for my 30 odd years as a gamer (and that's allowing for the fact I had a break once where I sold a lot of my old AD&D stuff). And for every physical product I've got, there's at least 1 if not 2 pdfs - I can't resist charity bundles, sales and other things so they tend to mount up.

Buried amongst the game systems I've got on my hard drive are dozens of things I've skimmed when I've downloaded them and thought 'I'll come back to that'. Add in a bunch of stuff I've looked at quickly and not quite grokked at the time, and a large percentage of my collection sits unused. So... is anyone interested in 'let's read X' type threads, and (and here's why I put it here, although maybe on reflection the Design/Dev/Gameplay forum would have been better) run through some examples of specific rules or parts of the game that people just don't 'get' - of which I personally have a number. Tutorials if you will, without it being an actual pbp, but most definitely not arena type threads as favoured by some of our dearly unloved recent past posters - an arena type scenario to teach the combat system and explore some of the options is OK, but not to prove a) that the game system is broken, b) that only people this high can play the game, or c) how big your dick is.

Tumbleweed, or top banana?
Here for gaming, not drama.
