This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Anyone else in the Industry sick of being confused with a Computer game designer?

No confused not compared. Wouldn't mind being compared but when people start poking me on facebook asking me to mod their computer games it pisses me off.

My thoughts exactly.

When people ask me who is the best game designer, my answer is "Shigeru Miyamoto, of course." The RPG "industry" could do far worse than learning from him.

The skillsets have crosspurposes.

There's a reason so many people in the RPG "industry" have gone on to become game developers, often quite successful ones.

I'll agree from a creative standpoint but not necessarily a technical one.

I have enough trouble working Photo Explosion I don't think I could manage a computer game.

Having said that I have found a cheat for POD/PDF Publishing that has saved me buying a PDF Writer.

Well there's your trouble! There are probably scads of Ians in the computer game industry. Might as well be Charlie or Jack. There's only one clash, though, so people never confuse me with some other designer.

Hey, I remember going to Siggraph one year, and getting an interview with some guys with a new monitor type. I was introduced by their PR guy as "a writer for a game magazine.", they smiled at me strangely, and we talked.

About 15 minutes in, I realized that they had heard "...a gay magazine.", and had to clarify, to nervous chuckles all around.

So, I enunciate VERY clearly that "m", because it's easy thing not to hear on a convention floor.

A nice education blog.

No, but I have had my fair share of people who assume my hobby is a computer game.
  • I could never play pen and paper, I spend all day looking at a computer! I'd much rather hang out with my friends and drink some brewskies!
  • Ok, but how do you hook a Games Workshop miniatures into the computer?
  • Your wife was telling me about your hobbies, I play Farmville with facebooks too!
Edit: Although the most common is "You painted that!? You should sell it and make a million billion dollars!"

PDF Postscript Document Format - Originally opensource, released under a GPL license (Could be wrong on the licensing, certain though it was released as a document format for postscript printers so all printers could print a universal formatted document).

Always been available for free. The most popular engine being Ghostscript, available here:

These days, Microsoft Word comes with a built-in PDF publisher as well, and I believe that the Opensource Office Clone Open Office also has a module that will allow one to create PDF's from Open Office Documents.

Reminds me of people ask me what my favorite dinosaur is. FYI: I'm an archaeologist. Of course, then I have to explain that I don't know how to use a whip, nor am I afraid of snakes. I usually make jokes about it.

I HATE HATE HATE that computer games are allowed to be called RPGs. It's insulting and demeaning.
