I have been waiting to see what RPGnow / Drivethru was going to do about the GSL vs. non-GSL 4e products. I have my answer:

All 4e PDF products are in the same page with equal placement Back in 3e, we had D20 vs. OGL divided into subdivisions. Currently, anyone who signs the GSL and gets the official logo will have their product sit next the "compatible" non-GSL product. Maybe the logo will have some meaning with print products . . . maybe . . . but online PDFs are all in the same boat.

So the message is clear. In regards to the GSL, that dawg don't hunt.

This is pretty much the craziest shit I have read all week, and I was skimming Hybrid so I could make a joke recently.

While there could be a point that this could dilute the brand somewhat, putting Apple Jacks on the shelf next to the Apple Zingers doesn't make the generic 'license' worthless.  Judge's Guild books most certainly were shelved next to the TSR products, which didn't make the TSR logo worthless.

There are a metric fuck-ton of reasons the GSL is useless or bad, but this one falls pretty far down on the list.

To me, the big advantage of the GSL is the ability to use the official D&D logo.

The big disadvantage is that the current wording of the GSL won't let you make that logo visible by placing it on the front cover (it has to be in the lower left hand corner of the back cover of a print product or the last page of a PDF.)

If you can't make the logo highly visible, what is the point of signing the restrictive GSL to use it?

Right now, the only reason I see to go GSL is in hopes of staying on WotC's good side. I think this is the only reason Necromancer Games is considering using the GSL... out of simple goodwill towards WotC. Plus I suppose the logo might still be worth something if you can use it in promotional materials.

Weird... I don't see Kingdoms of Kalamar on that page along with the other 4e compatible non-GSL material.

No GSL products actually come out until .. October or November, I think.
