This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Alpha play-testers needed soon

I am extremely close to completing Terran Story-Complete. While I have play-tested the game with my usual gang of ruffians I want a broader play-test this time around. And so...

I turn to the RPGSite community. I hope there are some takers.

The game is a sci-fi RPG based heavily on the original. It is not an interstellar space opera. The action is kept closer to home. The mechanics are lite.

The base PDF should be ready by Friday, at which time I will release it to any who are interested. If you have any questions, post them here and I'll answer them as best I can.

P.S. I want to keep the alpha play-test transparent, with suggestions and stuff posted here.

The play-test PDF is ready if anyone is interested. It is around 140 pages in length and the file is 3.6MB.

Hrms. My group wants to try an SF game, so what does this do that's cool?

Right now we're busy sorting things, to play. So I'm not sure when we'd get a chance, but depending on complexity, it is possible it would be soon enough to help.

It's a straight-forward mechanic that uses the d6. Nothing fancy. The setting shoots from the hip, in that it isn't a space opera. I'd appreciate it if your group gave it a whirl, or if you just looked it over yourself and gave me your thoughts. It's a setting and game I buried two years ago, but Clash demanded its resurrection. So here it is, in all its Frankenstein glory.

I'm going to be moving to an area where I could potentially be joining a 2nd weekly gaming group and have been looking over games such as Starcluster and Hard Nova, but what I've really wanted is a more limited setting that sounds much like what you've described so far. How far afield is the setting? Just our solar system, maybe one or two colonized planets? I would love to see the game, but I have to get the move accomplished (this weekend), and my cable/internet installed in the new place before I can begin commenting.

I know, I was interested in it the past, but never picked it up (mostly lack of time, as usual.) If you'd like to email me the copy my email is silverlion@gmail.com

The setting is confined to Earth, an unstable terra-formed lunar colony, asteroid operations, Mars, and New Canaan, an earth-like colony in another solar system. Instellar-travel is limited to the two solar systems, but nearly all the setting material is dedicated to our solar system alone. The option is there for GMs who wish to expand their games to New Canaan. There is an alien race that can be added later in the game or not. GM's choice. When you have finished your move and if you think you are interested, give me your email address and I'll send you the game.

P.S. What email do you want me to send it to?

Great stuff. Thanks, guys. I just got back to work today after the long weekend. I will send out copies to those who need them (Sig and Commander). Silverlion has already given me some excellent feedback.

Tim, if you have any suggestions how to incorporate game ideas into the copy please let me know. I could do it through sample characters (in the case of the bounty hunter scenario you mentioned).

In any case. I have some free moments today, so I'll get a move on things.

I just think you need to consider "What to do with this game.." style options, perhaps sample campaign seeds, perhaps simply presenting a conflict for people to jump in on. My own (unfinished) SF game includes playing Regulators (paid to investigate stuff like smuggling, illegal drive manufacturing etc..) Since space is just to big for police, military,  and corporations to cover.

Add to that the Insurance investigator (after all, someone claims a whole colony ship disappeared and wants the insurance on it...) you send these guys to find out if its true! Plus you know, usually its going to be a pack of lies they have to sort through, fight thugs, and so on.

Just some general ideas really is give some hooks to get players going. It was a problem with Trinity I had was it gives you this world, then doesn't give you ways to get involved readily.  Don't get me wrong, I like a setting that lets me do hundreds of possible campaigns, but give some of us a leg up on starting one.  The new Traveller does this by giving contacts and optional things going on, as well as skil lists for "types" of campaigns that each person may pick one skill from.

These are tools but not the only tools.

Things I might do if I run Terran Story:

Bounty Hunters

Xenobiologist/Investigators (Think poor old Croc Hunter but for planets!)

News Crews

Package Delivery Couriers. (Especially with all the craziness with slowish space travel.)

Space Dock Workers (deal with crazy day in the life stuff plus all sorts of crime)

These are just ideas I could do, but not everyone will think of them, so find a way to give the players and GM's a solid start. (Archetypes, contacts, game hooks)

Ah, all excellent stuff. I can cull Shebang for a lot of this, especially archetypes, etc. I could also cull Shebang for game ideas.
