Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). 5e has already removed alignment from any rules relevance. No more mechanics reference it. It's vestigial. This hasn't caused any problems to my knowledge.

"to my knowledge" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

Apparently you haven't seen the discussions on removing evil races from the game. Or the joke about changing the name of the Monster Manual to the Misunderstood Manual.

I have. I try not to pay attention to idiots.

At the end of the day, it's an elf-game about killing targets placed by the GM and getting XP and loot for doing so. Sometimes there are funny descriptions of flumps, lurkers below, sentient christmas trees, and so on.

Your Devotion attribute reminds me a lot of what 5e did in the DMG with examples of Sanity and Honor. I think you could very likely see something close to that, at the very least, used optionally in future editions.

Law and Chaos are foundational in my campaign. It is a critical piece of my world building. And while I am sure I will monkey around with whatever edition comes next, alignment will play a central role even if not specifically given rules in the game.

If we are doing predictions, I still think alignment makes an appearance in whatever they have planned for us in the next year and a half. As mentioned above, likely as a optional rule padded with useless fluff to avoid upsetting the upsettable.

Wrath of God

QuoteThe Sword & Sorcery and fantasy genres that inspired the early campaigns in general are rooted in the struggle of good and evil.

Are they? I consider S&S more about grey morality, antiheroes and general ruthlesness. Conan the Barbarian is pinnacle of S&S to me, and I do not see how his story is suddenly rooted in the struggle of good vs evil.

"Never compromise. Not even in the face of Armageddon."

"And I will strike down upon thee
With great vengeance and furious anger"

The next edition of DnD will get rid of Alignment.
. . .

It is almost guaranteed. The only people who truly believe in moral relativism are the chaotic evil ones.

I feel like this is making a mountain out of a molehill. I think alignment as a mechanic is more trouble than it's worth. Just look at the countless arguments over alignment that have occurred within the community over the last 40 years.

If you want to have a Moorcockian cosmic conflict between order and chaos, that's fine and dandy. Don't fuck it up by shoehorning another axis of good and evil into it.

Ruprecht

I've never been a fan of alignment, as far as the players are concerned.
I do like alignment as a general meta note of NPC and monster behavior though.
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing. ~Robert E. Howard

Black Plague Games

Dungeons and Dragons nowadays is a joke.
Wizards of the Coast is a joke.

That's why I'm putting everything I got in a new (sword and sorcery) game.

I try not to read any sarcasm put into that comment, in which case I will do. (update that is)

No sarcasm intended. I wouldn't mind seeing a new S&S game, but I hope the reason for putting it out is more because of what it will be rather than what it will not be (i.e, D&D).

Well put. It started out in utter frustration and anger (not really, but you get my point). It's turning into a labour of love.

I am in the same position: i didn't know 5E banned aligment (and if it won't, the effect is likely the same)... I am writing a game where aligment is an essential feature of the characters and the is a heavy game mechanics which pivots on aligment.
I hope to be able to launch this new FRPG before the end of the year, at least in a playtest version and i am eager to hear any comment/critic on what i built.
