This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Age of Fable world book?

Age of Fable

Someone suggested that I could make a setting book out of my game (//www.ageoffable.net).

Your thoughts?

I think it's a great idea. Gnome Chomskey, indeed.

I think Savage Worlds is a good one, but it might not accurately mirror the easy death. Can you convert the system you use for the online game?

Quote from: Age of Fable, in the original threadBut if you have maps, then you have limits on what you can have in your game.
For a setting without a stable geography, one potential solution to that problem might be to make a jigsaw of the map, with locales that can be switched around and shuffled about, so that it becomes possible to reconfigure the world whenever necessary.

That's a cool idea - very 'board-gamey'.

My idea was to have maps of small areas - for example an area of a city, a village etc.

Yes, an Age of Fable game resource would be wonderful.  Personally, I'd recommend systemless, but that's the way I blow.  I'm reminded thematically of Greg Stolze's Spherewalker Sourcebook for Everway, in which he went to some length to make it as systemless as possible, making it a more evocative literary piece -- and still good gaming.

By the way, my son and I have really enjoyed the online Age of Fable, but we've gotten caught in the desperate death-spiral of being broke and hungry in the city with no way to head for the hinterlands on more than one occasion.

Maybe too much male-style macho play, Ian? I always got that death spiral, then my woman played it, and said, "I am going to be nice to people", and it just kept going until she had to go and do something else, she did very well.

I died bald and in the sewer. I think it was a premonition.

My friend didn't like that "you can't kill anything."

I think I initially had too many punishments for fighting people, I've tried to balance it more recently.

That's an unfortunate side-effect of it not being finished, rather than an intended style. Most encounters can't happen more than once, and those that can are things like running out of money and being robbed.

Well, I'm kind of surprised at the enthusiasm for this. I'm pretty sure I'll start to work on it once the game itself is finished (at the end of this year hopefully).

I could, but I don't know if a new system would be a barrier to entry.

The big difference between my game and most others is that combat almost always takes one 'round'. That is, you roll to see if you win or lose, take damage if you lose, and that's usually it - the enemy, or you, dies or runs away.

What I might do is make it systemless, but point out the above, and suggest some free systems that could be used.

Are you implying that my son's 8-foot tall lizardman with a Charisma of 1 was a poor choice?  Hey, at least the brigands always let him sleep by the fire when he's out in the rough (though he's still almost always robbed blind come morning's light).

The lizard-man is kind of a 'power-gamer' character - lots of magic, lots of combat, no social skills.
