Traveller through the eyes of the newest generation to adopt the game.

Alright so... I talked about my Boys' interest in playing Traveller. Before the Holiday he had actually rolled up a character, one Zenton Mars from Caladbolg, In the Sword Worlds, In the Spinward Marches.

I deliberately set the start of the campaign to 1108, which was immediately after the Fifth Frontier War had begun... The Zhodani had attacked in force across the Imperial Frontier into the Regina Subsector and were putting heavy pressure on the Imperials.

Their allies, the Vargyr had also attacked as well, and both the Zhodani and Vargyr were busy recruiting Sword World Mercenaries to join in the attack on Duke.

362-1107 Traveller News Service. Rhylanor, Spinward Marches. "Today the systems of Kinorb and Yorbund fell to Vargyr Forces allied with the Zhodani."

Zenton Mars had just mustered out from the Merchant Service. He had, after buying an ATV, and some gear, as well as some personal firearms about 15,000 cr left from his mustering out benefits. He was in the city of Nibald on Caladbolg where he had originally enlisted. He decided to take a road trip and drove about 350 Km over to Nal which was a nearby city. Being a Rich Industrial planet, there was lots of high tech stores and places, as well as plentiful opportunities to shop and Zenton was still flush with cash.

Dinner was 15 cr at McBurgers where you have it your way, and the robots make sure it is so, and not wanting to spend any more money, Zenton decided to drive out of Nal and camp a way North on the beach in his ATV.

Morning brought Zenton back into Nal for breakfast at another restaurant Yubaja. There Zenton inquired where he could buy a good combat robot model, and the robotic waitress in the restaurant directed Zenton to visit Tardys' Electronics in town. Zenton left an extra good tip of about 100 cr for her...

Zenton dutifully drove over, and for 11,500 cr, purchased Zender, a robot that looks remarkably like Bender, except that Zender has a built-in laser rifle as well Gun Cbt -1 Laser skills preprogrammed in.

With Zender joining him in the ATV he drove back over to Yubaja and asked the robotic waitress about where he could find a good job. Looking over the new combat robot, she directed him back to an address close to the Starport in Nibald where she said he would get a good opportunity from an oriental gentleman named Aimuyze.

Zenton Mars Immediately took the six hour road trip back to Nibald in heavy traffic, and showed up at the fabulous estate of Aimuyze in the early evening. With the referral and reference, he was offered a job to execute a Sword Worlds Mercenary Captain named Zerrios on the world of Durendal. The job paid 100,000 Cr with half paid now, and half paid on delivery of proof of death. With his fancy new combat robot, Zenton Mars immediately accepted the job, and spent the night at Aimuyze's luxurious estate.

In the morning Zenton woke up and suddenly realized that Zender the robot was slowly losing power, and would require either a recharge, or a brand new battery, so he set off immediately for Nal, and once again visited Tardy Electronics, to pick up a recharger and an extra battery...

Then he immediately turned around and returned again to Nibald (to the Starport, to be exact), and used the High Passage Ticket to book a passage on the 1,000 ton Zeus Wayne, a Planet Express Starlines Starliner.

With his tracked ATV loaded into cargo, and his robot Zender powered down and stowed in his luxury stateroom, Zenton Mars, setoff for Durendal in search of his true destiny.

... There, before Thanksgiving,  we ended the first session...

Sword Worlds Saga - Session Two
completed today in a short three hour session

The First Jump to Biter was uneventful, and a short stop of eight hours in the light of the Yellow Giant Star illuminating Biter, brought a dozen new mercenaries aboard the Zeus Wayne, as well as some TNS news that was relayed immediately proceeding the second scheduled jump...

014-1108, TNS Traveller News Service - Rhylanor, Spinward Marches, The Imperial Admiralty has classified 25 systems in the Regina, Lanth,and Vilis subsectors as combat zones.

021-1108,   Zeus Wayne arrives in the Sting system, only to run into an Imperial Blockade consisting of a 5,000 ton multi-purpose fusion carrier CVF Michelson. The Michelson carries over one hundred 20-ton System Fighters, and is escorted by the 450 ton Missile Destroyer Zeta Taylor, as well as the 400 ton Imperial Destroyer Fort Fire. The Imperials order the Sword Worlds Merchant Liner to surrender, and the captain refuses, and makes a run on the blockade to land on Sting. Fifty short range fighters are dispatched, as well as both Imperial Destroyers to intercept and board the Zeus Wayne.

Being a Sword Worlds independent merchant vessel, it's armed to the teeth with nine hardpoints including two triple beam lasers, and two triple missile racks as well as six pulse laser batteries. The first round (medium range)  goes to Zenton and the captain of the Zeus Wayne, as the liner scores a critical hit on the Imperial Destroyer Fort Fire and it explodes in a spectacular display of pyrotechnics. The opening salvos from the Destroyer(a) and the Fighters that got into range, take out one of the missile racks on the Zeus Wayne, as well as a pulse laser turret. and The jump drive is also utterly wrecked. Escape is now well, nigh impossible. By the time all the fighters,and the remaining Imperial Destroyer moves to close range, The Zeus Wayne is in a low orbit over Sting, and the planetary defensive batteries come online, and a pair of heavy cruisers is also dispatched from the surface to drive off the Imperials.

The last round of fighting is exceptionally brutal with the Zeus Wayne having it's onboard computers disabled, and it is holed so bad by laser fire that Zenton has to complete the battle in a full Vacc Suit as the entire liner has been hit so often, it is completely depressurized.... Lots of fuel and cargo were lost, however the bay holding Zenton's tracked ATV was merely depressurized for safety during the battle, and the ATV arrives unscathed.

At Sting, the liner is held up for three whole weeks as the Jump Drives have to be completely replaced, and extensive repairs made to the weapons, computers, hold, and external skin of the Star Liner.

Zenton omitted the details of his three week sojourn on Sting which included the fact that while out and about on the town, he got mugged by a gang of Sword World thugs and lost almost 50,000 cr, as well as having his killer robot Zender disabled, as well as a second combat robot Chad (whom he subsequently sold for 2,000 cr as scrap) in order to get some spending cash...


 035-1108, TNS Traveller News Service - Regina, Spinward Marches, Yorbund, taken by the Vargyr, Ruby, Emerald, and Lysen, Taken by the Zhodani.

The last two jumps to Durendal are uneventful, with the Imperial Interdiction fleet having withdrawn to the next sector over, District 268. Zenton arrives with his non-functioning robot Zender, and lands at Durendal Starport/Colony, population 550, with no sign of the Mercenary Captain Jerrio. A dispatch received from Aimuzye indicates Captain Jerrio is located somewhere on planet at a training facility with about 100 mercenaries under his command.


Here we ended our Saga for today. The boy wants to join me for Traveller sessions at gaming conventions, so I'm thinking it he's liking it. He's been busy drawing up plans to ambush Capt. Jerrios, and the writeup and artwork he's done up on his "purchased" robots is impressive.

Sword Worlds Saga - Session Three
Saturday Morning Game running until about noon or so...

Durendal B687334 TL B (Automated Naval Base Present in Orbit)

Durendal Colony is located on a planet that is in the first 0rbit, just .2 AU from an enormous Red Giant Star that is 9x the size of sol. The planet is cool enough to have ice caps, however the dark green foliage of surface vegetation appears black in the deep red light of the enormous sun that dominates the daytime sky... Durendal does have native animal life...

Day 1
First thing Zenton Mars does after picking up the dispatch from the Colony Comms center, is go to check on his Tracked ATV which was delivered to the Colony Vehicle Shop.

The tracked ATV checked out good, Zenton then inquired if there was a job opening in the vehicle shop, the Manager, John Robertson said yes, he was looking for a vehicle sales person, as well as an assistant. Zenton was hired on the spot for 500 cr / month, and was told to return the next day to begin work.

Zenton retired to his ATV, and drove it out of the colony traveling some 30km west until he reaches the nearby great river, where he parks on the riverbank and has lunch. The afternoon is spent playing halo-like games with Zender the robot, with Zenton and the Robot alternately win...

Dinner is prepared from the ATV stores (9 day supply of food left after this), and Zenton watches the news on Tri-D vee video before retiring for the evening...

050-1108 TNS Traveller News Service - Jewel, Spinward Marches. Jewel has been sealed off by the Zhodani 10th fleet, and Zhodani ground forces land on the world's minor North continent.

050-1108 TNS Traveller News Service - Rejhappur, Reaver's Deep. Director-General Sir Percival Jameison has been slain by an angry mob after ordering the planetary garrison to disperse protesters. Contact has been lost with the Capitol.

Zenton cheered the Zhodani on...

Day 2
Zenton shows up for work,and is ordered out to the Northern Docking Platform to pick up a fancy Purple and Black tracked ATV belonging to Sir Jake Miris. Sir Jake has just arrived on planet. Zenton checks out the ATV and makes sure it is working properly, and shortly thereafter Sir Miris shows up with four retainers to pickup the ATV. Zenton is tipped 100 Cr for his excellent service, and Sir Jake loads up the ATV, and he and his retainers depart from the colony.

Zenton spends the afternoon playing games with Zender the Robot, and parks his own ATV just outside of the Colony Dome for the evening, retiring after watching re-runs of the previous days' news.

Day 3
John Robertson has no work for Zenton, so he is given the day off. Zenton plays games in the ATV with Zender, and explores Durendal Colony.

Day 4
A star liner has arrived in orbit, the Lady Grey. Five hovercraft are delivered planetside to Durendal Colony and Zenton spends the day off loading the Hovercraft and checking them out. One seriously malfunctions, delaying the liftoff of one of the Lady Greys' shuttles for several hours, Zenton uses his ATV to drag the damaged hovercraft off of the landing pad to the Colony vehicle shop and orders parts from off-planet to repair the Hovercraft. He also learns that the Hovercrafts final destination will be Captain Jarrios' mercenary camp. Once the last hovercraft is repaired, John Roberston will call Captain Jarrios to arrange for the pickup/delivery of the Hovercraft.

Day 5
Zenton has the day off again, but is paid 125 Cr for his first week of work. He promptly goes to the Colony gaming Arcade and spends 50 Cr playing super-futuristic games for about an hour.

He then goes to see the Durendal Colony Administrator, Joshua Dunky, only to find his administrative assistant Ms. Carly Lawson instead. Joshua Dunky, it turns out, is off on an extended survey expedition with a mining team looking for new natural resources to harvest. Not caring to leave a message Zenton goes up to the fourth level to talk to the guards on the roof.

He inquires with a guard, if the guard believes the colony could hold up in the event of an attack by an Imperial Destroyer, and is reassured to learn the Colony has adequate defensive batteries to hold off a single destroyer indefinitely.

In the evening, Zenton retires to his ATV mobile home which he parks about fifty yards from the Colony Dome ground vehicle entrance.

Thus ended our third gaming session.

Sword Worlds Saga - Session 4
Sunday afternoon game running for a couple of hours

Finally finished up with the Holidays and am getting back to a more relaxed schedule...

Day 6
Zenton began the morning seeking out people that knows more about the Zhodani and the Vargyr than he does. He doesn't have much luck and returns to the mechanics shop at the Colony after spending 50cr for an Alien Burger lunch at McBurgers in the Colony Station.

When he arrives, Zenton finds Captain Zarrios with ten mercenaries who have arrived to pick up their new Hovercraft. Capt. Zarrios and the Mercenaries, pay John Robertson and depart without a great show of force...

After lunch he goes out looking to meet random strangers to inquire about the Zhodani and the Vargyr... The first person he meets a colony engineer named Davis is out walking his Pinger, a pet he adopted, and also a creature native to Durendal that has been domesticated by the colonists... Davis is unable to provide much information about either the Vargyr or the Zhodani.

A black skinned red-eyed creature somewhat resembling a smooth-skinned cat, about 2x as large as a domestic house cat. In the wild hunts small creatures both on the surface and underground. Carnivorous. Has low light vision.

Approaching the Colony Post Office Zenton is accosted by 6 thugs who brandish daggers and demand money. Zenton refuses and draws his communicator to summon local law enforcement only to realize he never obtained a number or contact ID. The thugs attempt to stab him.

Having (and wearing) combat armor provides a definite advantage against street thugs, and with subsequent rounds of action Zenton draws his body pistol, and Zender the robot unleashes a protective barrage with his built-in laser rifle. In short order the thugs are unconscious or dead, and Zenton goes up to the Colony guard on the fourth level to report the attempted robbery.

One robber was killed, but the other five (all wounded) are taken into custody to stand trial for attempted robbery. Zenton is informed, that it is very likely that these colonists will be taken away to a work/prison where they will serve out a long sentence for their crimes.

He also finds out from talking to the guards that both the Zhodani and the Vargyr have a consulate on Joyuese (The subsector capitol) and if he wants to find out more about them, that would be a good place to start.

Day 7
Zenton stops by the Travellers Aid Society to pick up his high passage ticket. He immediately books a passage for Joyeuse and gives his notice to John Robertson, picking up his ATV.

He pays for a trip to Joyeuse aboard the first vessel he can find at the colony that is headed in that direction, the 336 Ton Free Trader, Dace, under the command of Captain Chris Lawson (unknown to Zenton, Captain Lawson is a smuggler who routinely carries contraband into Imperial Space, and carries refugees and dissidents out).

Thread is getting about 20 or so reads a post, so there's a few folks following it. Just the first time for my boy playing the Traveller RPG... ...in the Spinward Marches, during the Fifth Frontier War...so a lot of interesting stuff is showing up.

Sword World Saga Session 5 10/12/2014

The landing on Hofud was quick, there was only an overnight hour turnaround as Captain Chris Lawson aboard Dace refueled, and picked up passengers and mail, and rapidly departed making for Beater. Zenton shut off Zender, and made time playing cards and games on Dace as it jetted out to a safe jump point.

Sword Worlds Saga Session 6 10/15/2014

landing on Beater 685686AB Zenton reactivated Zender and noting the planetary restrictions on firearms concealed a body pistol inside of Zender. Zenton and Zender then disembarked from the Dace and went looking for someone who could tell them more about Mercenaries,

They met Bob the Hunter, and his son Young Billy (age 12) at the local Gunshop on Beater Prime. Bob the Hunter likes using laser rifles. Billy just had a hunting knife though. Bob talked Zenton into going hunting in the wilderness just North of Beater Prime, and they set off on foot into the wilderness.

They came across an enormous three-eyed flying white bear like creature with a set of wicked looking horns, and they all tried to bag it, but it flew off and got away. So they camped overnight outdoors underneath the blood red dwarf sun... Zender then remembered that the Starship Dace would likely depart first thing in the morning, and hurried off to catch his ride, but alas, was too late for the Dace had departed promptly for Joyuese first thing in the morning.

Zenton then immediately booked the first passage offworld going to Joyeuse. being down to just 3,000 or so credits, Zenton had to book a Low Passage for this trip, and then spent an extra 330 credits on a hotel and food, while waiting the three days for the Merchant Space Liner to depart.

Month 2, Week 2, Day 6

We took an intermission and watched the cryogenic sleep wake-up sequence in the movie Alien and in Alien 2 so the boy would have a good idea of what actually happens in low passage while on board a starship. I debated whether to include the opening sequence for Pitch Black, but decided against it, as the cryogenic sleepers dying was only a secondary effect of that awesome spectacular starship crash at the beginning of that movie, and I thought the crash would just distract him from the normal cryogenic survival routine.

Zenton woke up successfully on Joyeuse, at Joyeuse Starport had a big breakfast, fired up Zender, and went over to the Dace which was docked within sight of them, then he picked up his ATV. Zenton promptly went into town after that, found a clothing store that specialized in Mercenary outfits, bought a mercenary outfit, and was directed to the Offices of the 94th Greenwatch Mercenary Regiment Headquarters, where he was told a certain Captain Chris Potter was looking for new recruits to join a Vargyr combat division that had dropped onto Emerald a couple months before.

Zender
was signed on aboard the Black Star, a 1,000 ton Mercenary Cruiser, as an Engineers Mate, with the understanding he would allow the regiment to use him as a driver (and his ATV, of course, as a troop transport, when they weren't in space.)

We ended this session here. Even aboard a Jump3 Cruiser, it is still going to take Zender seven Jumps and Seven weeks before anyone aboard this Mercenary Cruiser will even be able to see any Vargyr or Zhodani invasion force, or landing sites in Imperium space...

I think I'm going to do up a six-page mercenary contract on legal-sized paper of course, and include a bunch of cash forfeiture clauses, and of course whole sections and maybe even whole pages in fine 8 point font print just for kicks... We'll' see if the boy will sign it, just so he can go shoot some Imperials.

New Planetary maps for Joyeuse (left) and Beater (right) done up just for the game this week. Joyeuse, the Subsector capitol is a rich green agricultural world with hot deserts at the poles.

Month 3 Week 2 Day 2
1108-117

The Black Star jumped to Hrunting in the Sword Worlds Confederacy where it landed and Zenton Mars, and Zender the Robot were granted a 3 day shore leave while the Mercenary Transport was serviced and fully provisioned for battle.

Zenton first made arrangements for receiving his final 50,000 Cr for eliminating a mercenary Captain (Which he failed to do, He left Durendal before infiltrating the Mercenary camp there.... This is probably going to come back on him, just not at the moment.)

Zenton smuggled weapons in Zender planetside in a system where firearms are outlawed, and they drove the ATV around Tanold City looking for a military vehicle shop. Zenton finally found a wilderness outfitter that was looking to buy and sell vehicles, and Zenton sold the ATV.

Landon joined our game here rolling up Corgon Faveller, an ex-Navy guy that is a skilled gunner as well as a highly competent Small Craft Pilot, with a Ship's Boat II skill.

Corgon signed on as a Boatswain and Gunner on the Black Star. Of course, Corgon met Zenton, after Zenton returned. Zenton found out it was in his contract to serve as an ATV driver, and it was expected that he would bring his ATV, so he had to go back into Tanold City, buy back the ATV, and he used some of the extra cash he received from his failed mercenary ticket to buy a new pintle-mounted autocannon for the ATV with five full magazines of HE/APDS/Incendiary ammo.

After two days the ship departed Hrunting and made an uneventful jump to Vilis the Imperium subsector capitol for the Vilis subsector. This is where we ended the session, right when the jump was made....

A Highlight of the evening... When Corgon and Zenton where describing Lieutenant Smith, the 94th regiment's recruiting officer... Corgon was trying to get hired by the 94th and had been directed to meet with the LT aboard ship to sign a contract. So I told him to describe the LT. They described him as a sort of fat guy with shades and a Mohawk. I pulled out a custom painted mini with shades and a Mohawk that looks a lot like Mr. T  who was pointing and they started laughing. They couldn't believe I already had a mini for a scene they were just beginning to describe.

...and prepped for some Saturday Traveller gaming tomorrow. Have some guests coming over to join the game we have been running, so broke out one of the convention tables, and painted up som more planets... The Gas Giants came out really well!
