This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

A Very High Magic World

So despite the world ending I'm still on the hook to run tonight and the laptop with all my notes decided to leave this world early.

So to make a long post short, let us create a very high-magic fantasy setting where clean burning magic-infused "batteries" make it all things wonderous possible.

You could end up with a universe that looks a bit like modern day earth, only magical: the roads are paved with solidified shadow and families ride their flying carpets home to watch Crystalvox Sports (Trolls vs. Ogres) on their crystal balls.

Or, not magitech so much, but general stores stock cheaply mass-produced magic items - Immovable Rods replace ladders, Cubes of Force and Rods of Lordly Might can be had for a pittance, the blacksmith sells magical weapons rather than mundane weapons, the general store sells Boots of Elvenkind and such. Griffons and pegasi could be the main mounts for sale rather than horses and mules.

I'd imagine 'batteries' being almost a wand-specific innovation. Instead of the wand being constructed as a 50-charge item or whatever, build it as 1-charge (1/50th the cost) and then plug a battery into a battery hole in the back that supplies the charges. Spell level determines the battery size.

Anyway, you get the idea...

Giant mecha battle utilizing upscale magic weapons against giants, mega-trolls and dragons all vying for a place as the latter are pushed out by larger and larger cities that expand as more people flock to the magical-industrial bases.

The implied setting of high level 3.0 DnD and the infamous "scry-and-die" school of tactics.  Except every level 1 commoner is effectively a high level wizard if they can get the right batteries and gear.

I don't see how Ooo fits the OP's description?

Its a high fantasy world where anything's possible.

jadrax

I think one of the things I would try and avoid is simply ending up with magic replicating technology, because that just ends up as a sci-fi game with pseudo-medieval trappings.

Yes, sure. But not explicitly one where "clean burning magic-infused "batteries"" are a central feature of the setting.

Back after holiday shenanigans.

We made characters and played the first game and things went well. Now I have to rewrite my lost setting info from what I can recall and jadrax makes an interesting point. A glorified scifi setting is something I want to avoid. So perhaps "very high" magic is too much to be shooting for with this world but I still want a creation with ambition and a spark of the unusual.

At the risk of unleashing verbal diarrhea here's what I recall:
  • Elves split into 4 factions - High (dying), Sky, Dark & Wild. They split along arcane/religious lines.
  • A developed, heavily populated "old world" and a wild, frontier-like "new world" just being tamed/colonized.
  • Late 18th or early 19th century style and technology.
  • Halflings are a slave race, seen religiously as a first and aborted attempt at the creation of humans.
  • The pantheon consists of risen "immortals" who appear to diferent peoples in a variety of guises.
  • A floating isle of a dead civ, a train, an airship

Also, this thread should likely be moved to the design forum.

Elves
Long ago, even by their standards, the Elves flourished as masters of the land. Eventually the race split among four factions starting with the Dark Elves who were cast underground for their worship of a "false" goddess. Some centuries later another faction (now the Wild Elves) who saw the overuse of arcane magics as an affront to the Earthmother. After a nasty civil war the remaining Elves broke into three camps: High Elves, the original group devoted to the arcane, the Wild Elves, who prayed for the Earthmother to deliver them away and simply disappeared, and the last faction, tired of the violence and not aligned during the war, sailed south to the Isles and today are known as Sky Elves. Shortly after the final split the High Elves, in their hubris, sought long forgotten Elven spells to open a portal to their gods. Upon its casting things went horribly wrong and instead caused a virulent arcane sickness to fall upon them.
