This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Spike's World:Cultural Stereotypes

This is, as stated, a sort of semi-random collection of the various stereotypes that people might express or encounter when running around in Haven. Some of which will be familiar tropes, but I hope at least a few are insightful and unique and make you think.

World wide there is a general tendancy to think of people from the north as larger and more inclined to violence, while people to the south tend to be shorter and more 'civilized'.  This varies somewhat depending on where the speaker stands, as obviously the Reve and the Bear Tribes that can be realistically the most Nothern of men think of southlanders as 'soft' rather than 'civilized', and Tenebrians are the southernmost culture, don't consider themselves soft at all, and there are people that live south of them that are utterly uncivilized.

The Nornsans hold a similar west-east stereotype, that the further east one goes the more barbaric the culture, this of course clashes horribly with the Tenebrians, who view themselves as the most civilized, and view the western half of Haven to be the domain of arrogant fools.

Note that in Haven itself the cardinal directions as stated do not exist but are merely used for common reference by us. Haven is 'flat', with a true 'center' of the world, though the natives tend to disagree as to where that center is.  Human and dwarf maps are common and fairly similar and easy to read as both were made with practical eyes towards cartography and ease of use. Elves don't mind spending a decade or two learning how to read a map, thus their maps are not very intuitive and are honestly all but unsuable to anyone but a trained elven mapreader. Even THEY tend to need three or four times as long as normal map readers to interpret the directions.... in some cases days.   Ironically, this has led to a cultural reluctance to use maps but to instead rely on personal knowledge of the area/route and memory, leading to the common curse 'About as useful as an Elvish map'.  Not entirely accurate, however, as Elven maps are incredibly detailed and frequently the only recorded works on many ancient mysteries. With a proper guide they can lead one even through the most dangerous of places safely and comfortably... if not quickly.  It might help if you think of elvish map makers as the sort of obsessive video game players who can find every exploit and easter egg in a given game, and will just because.

In the north west, orcs are considered to be beasts, much like parrots and apes in their ability to talk and in form.  In the south particularly, Orcs are held up as more 'noble savages' at worst. Many, in for example Paravail or Tenebria hold that Orcs uphold tradition better than all other races, and their loyalty and honor are their finest traits.   In Paravail some consider them 'half men', given only the finest of traits by the Gods, but missing some essential portion of the soul that makes them human... ironically the same portion that was corrupted by demons (or more accurately, given freedoms by the demons in a collaborative effort with the Gods) that makes men less honorable.

Dwarves are universally considered fine merchants, craftsmen and gluttons. While stout of appearance it is actually unusual to see a truly fat dwarf, though they do tend to eat and drink heavily, mostly bread based foods and beer.  Most believe dwarven women don't exist, thus many assume dwarves enjoy the attentions of men, or that they are hideous she-beasts kept locked up in cages for the safety of civilized men.   Among the dwarves such rumors are a source of much amusement, and the frequent attentions of human males have led dwarves to speculate about human promiscuity.  To be vulgar, the northern dwarves in particular tend to say 'humans will fuck anything', and they tend to believe any creature holding human traits to have been created by a human sleeping with something else, all evidence to the contrary not withstanding.

Dwarves from the south tend to think of their northern cousins as hidebound fools, whipped and weak willed.  THose from the north believe the southern 'clans' are blasphemous scum with the morals of a mercenary and with no respect for womenfolk.  While most humans can not tell the difference to casual inspection, with southern dwarves having slightly flatter skulls and shorter noses, while northern dwarves have larger eyes and ears, each holds the differences to be clear indications of the proclivities of the opposed.  Thus a human with a small nose and flattish skull (comparatively one supposes, dwarves having lower forheads and flatter skulls that humans by a wide margin already) would be described as shifty looking by a dwarf from the north.

Both humans and elves believe the other species is overly concerned with status and appearance.  An elf finds little shame in, being a chamber pot emptier, while maintaining a meticulous appearance at all times.  Humans tend to believe elves have rediculously refined palates and are excessively promiscuious.  Elves think human food is too heavy and savory and think humans all want to sleep with them.

Reves are well known as bloodthirsty mauraders who only desire rape and pillage, and that they live their entire lives on the sea.  The Spada believe the Reve to be demons in human form, and the Tenebrians believe they were born of the waves, though they respect them as 'elemental men'.

Spada, of course, is filled with things in the shape of men but who are not, properly speaking men.  It is a well documented fact that there are no Spada women. Some believe the Spada are grown from teeth sown in the ground, fully born and ready for battle in a single growing season.   Spada tend to believe that the women of other cultures are unpleasantly curvy.  It is true, however, that the Spada grow quickly, having short pregancies and short childhoods. A Spada of 12 years is a man fully grown by their standards.  Ironically the Spada venerate love above all other emotions, and they fight for the love of Spada itself, not because they hate their enemies.  Naturally they believe they are the most enlightened of cultures and they must battle constantly to keep the savages from extinguishing their light.

In Nornsan and Tenebrian cultures (meaning, thus, most of the human world), a horseman is superior to men who cannot or will not ride. All men of breeding and wealth are expected to maintain stables and many 'sports' of the nobilty involve displays of skill.  In many of the nomadic tribes of the Sea of Grass, and some of the Tenebrian kingdoms on the northern continent one is not a man until one rides.  Exceptions include Paravail and much of the Hygleac pennisula, the Pepper Savannahs, Hesh and Nis to the south, and the Reve. Even the Bear Tribes hold true to this ideal, at least in part, holding horsemen of warm lands in almost mythic regard, and emulating them by riding their totem animal spirits (bears for the actual bear tribes, Elk for those tribes, though the wolf tribes of the very northernmost wastes merely run alongside their totem animals in packs... but everyone knows the wolves are crazy from staring out over the edge of the world all the time...)

The Nis are thought to be treacherous poisoners and master traders while the Hesh are thought by some to have an unparralled mastery of old magics, though tainted by primative superstition.  The Melitior Plain's people are thought to be sinister, and the rise of the flame cults there are a sign of their inherent madness.

The Nornsan's consider Tenebrians effeminate and deceitful. The Tenebrians (from teh Empire anyway) consider the Nornsan's to be overgrown children.

When this idea came to me last night I felt like I had a lot more concrete and simple statements to give.

But the rush job here is mostly ass.  Bah.

It rambles a bit, even for you :) but I like many of the ideas.

I'll be stealing generously from some of your pursuits for Dunfalcon :D

By all means, steal away. Dog knows I'm not putting it to much use right now...

Last night, as I said, I had a much clearer vision for what was supposed to be in here but sleep and a full plate at work did much to erode that picture into the sloppy mess you see here...

Hopefully I'll be able to keep up the rate of work. Tomorrow is officially the start of my new job in a new office with a new boss, though I'm still going to be, for a week or two, doing the old job as well... ah... transitions.
